A Fresh, Green 2014 – 10 Tips for What and How to Recycle in Oceanside

Screen Shot 2014-01-08 at 2.35.00 PMIf the kids at our local schools can do it, so can we! Both Palmquist Elementary and Lincoln Middle School are Zero Waste Schools – Lincoln diverts approximately 68% and Palmquist diverts about 85% of their waste from the landfill! And since landfills are a touchy subject, keeping as few items as possible from going into them is important, so we’ve put together some simple info to help you fulfill those new year’s resolutions to de-clutter and be more environmentally conscious.
1. Thinking Ahead: Christmas tree collection is available the first two weeks after Dec. 25th. After that you’ll need to cut it up so it fits into your green waste bin, otherwise, it will sit at your curb till 2015.
Hopefully by now everyone knows you can’t just throw things like batteries, electronics, and motor oil in the trash. You CAN, however, recycle them right out there on the curb with your waste bins! Here’s how:

The 4th Annual Holly Jolly on Molly and More Oceanside Events!

HOLLY JOLLY ON MOLLY (1)

The upcoming weeks are filled with events – yes, most of them involve shopping and eating, but be sure to enjoy some time in your hometown of Oceanside! One way to do that, if you’re a Fire Mountain resident is to join us for the 4th annual Holly Jolly on Molly happening December 8th, 5:00- 9:00 p.m. on the Molly Circle cul-de-sac. Bring a desert or appetizer to share and be sure to dress warm and bring a chair.

Don’t forget the Oceanside Turkey Trot – Move Your Feet Before You Eat! There are still spots available and a kids 1 mile run is open to kids in all different age categories. The entry fee is reasonable and proceeds benefit local schools – pick Palmquist or Lincoln to support Fire Mountain schools! If nothing else, get out and support your neighbors and enjoy the weather before settling in for the food marathon.

If you plan to shop, skip Black Friday and head out on Small Business Saturday! If you shop with your Amex card and spend $10 at a participating small business, you’ll get that $10 back & that includes local restaurants! Find a list of those businesses here. Even if you aren’t an Amex customer, there are a ton of great small businesses in Oceanside where you can find good food, an outfit for your holiday party, get your car fixed, find a nice pipe, decorate your holiday table or just pick up a hot cup of coffee by the beach…whatever it is you’re into, just be sure to support your neighborhood shops.

Also happening next week is the Friends of Fire Mountain Networking Group meeting. The meeting will be held December 3, 2013 at 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Café Rosarita – 1816 Oceanside Blvd. Oceanside, CA 92054.  The last meeting was a great informative gathering of business-minded neighbors and we look forward to working together to make Fire Mountain a great place not only to live, but to do business. Food will be available (eat local!) and we’re excited to see you there!

Coaster and Amtrak Closed This Weekend

Screen Shot 2013-11-06 at 12.03.24 PMIf you are planning to go to San Diego or LA November 16-17th, plan on sitting in some traffic.  Due to the work on the Santa Margarita Bridge through Pendleton, the coastal lines including the Coaster, MTS, Amtrak, and freight trains will not be running in San Diego County.

Amtrak has said it will provide bus service to the Irvine station (although if you go to book a ticket from SD to LA, it does not make you aware of the situation!) and Coaster riders are encouraged to use the Breeze bus route 101.

The rails should be back up and running for the Monday commute.

Oceanside Traffic and Transit Updates – Details on I-5 Expansion

IMG_8653Fire Mountain Traffic: Looks like Avocado Rd. is the latest through-street in Phase 1 of traffic calming measures. Thanks to the persistence of our neighbors the city has installed a radar trailer on Avocado Rd. and is studying the need for additional measures. Normally Phase 1 consists of “educating the public” and the radar trailer is one way to educate motorists as to how fast they are actually traveling.

Our streets become particularly dangerous during the holidays as more people cut through our neighborhood to get to the Wal-Mart shopping center, let’s hope the education process is stepped-up during that time.

Changes to Downtown Oceanside: Mission Avenue, between Horne Street and Coast Highway, started it’s update last week and will continue renovations until Summer 2014.  Like many more metropolitan downtown areas the main entryway to Oceanside will become a two lane, one-way street.  Mission Avenue will be converted to a west-bound only route, while Seagaze Drive, one block south of Mission Avenue, will be converted to a one-way east bound street. Let the confusion begin! For more info visit the City of Oceanside web site.

Screen Shot 2013-11-07 at 1.51.38 PMInterstate 5 Expansion Project: The environmental impact report for the $3 billion 27-mile I-5 expansion project has been completed and hundreds of pages are now available here for download. The last public meeting in Oceanside was in 2010. Since that time the agency has heard from more than 5000 people and incorporated their comments into the planning  – the improvements are focused on carpools, transit, and express lanes.

Highlights of Oceanside area changes include a couple of pocket parks, some sound barriers, The visual simulation looks as if the freeway is really encroaching on the Buena Vista Lagoon and there are major improvements to bike and pedestrian paths along all 27 miles.

The incredibly dangerous I5 / 78 Interchange is not a part of this expansion. While there are a couple of changes on the docs, that is a separate project that will move forward independently and supposedly meetings were to be scheduled Summer 2013 (Did we miss those?).

According to the web site, the I-5 Express Lanes project is just one component of the planned $6.5 billion North Coast Corridor (NCC) Program, which includes highway, rail, transit, environmental protection and coastal access improvements. Planned improvements such as the I-5 Express Lanes provide flexibility for future for transit services such as Bus Rapid Transit and highway express buses. Adding Express Lanes to I-5, double tracking the coastal rail line and improving local and regional bike and pedestrian trails are part of the NCC Program’s system solution to focus on moving people rather than just cars.

It looks like there were approximately 10 options considered and the “Preferred Alternative,” announced in July 2011, is the Express Lanes Only option (8+4 with Buffer Alternative) which “results in nearly 50 percent fewer Right-of-Way impacts and focuses on project phasing and coordination to minimize impacts to the environment and the community during construction.”

New Developments in Oceanside and Carlsbad

With the group of residents on Laurel Rd. in Fire Mountain continuing to address the speeding and traffic concerns that tend to plague Fire Mountain, we’ve been following a few of the latest in business developments that will impact our local roads and surrounding freeways.

Saturn Property Vista Way

You may have noticed the recent demolition happening on the corner of Vista Way and Jefferson. The property is owned by Nissan Corporation and while waiting to be sold the location has been home to a few temporary businesses such as the Home Depot nursery, a Halloween store, a Christmas store, and a Christmas tree lot.

Recently we learned the demolition is part of a contingency on the sale of the property to Scripps Health. The City of Oceanside has had held developer meetings with Scripps regarding the building of a clinic and physicians offices on the site. The public has not been notified of the status and only residents within 300 ft. of the property will receive a notice once permits are filed and the yellow notification signs go up.  The zoning in that area allows a building height of up to 50 ft. or approximately 4 stories. The city planner on the project did not have a response to questions regarding concerns about how increased traffic or building height will be addressed.

—- UPDATE (11/6/2013) According to a city employee the Scripps project was given a pass as it doesn’t meet the commercial zoning plan.  Nissan has simply bulldozed the buildings to make it more marketable. We will update as more information is available.—–

On the other side of the 78 freeway, in Carlsbad, the Westfield, Plaza Camino Real (sometimes referred to as the “ghetto mall”) has also started renovations. According to the Westfield web site:

The regional mall, originally constructed in 1969, will be renamed Westfield Carlsbad when completed in November 2014. The renovation plans include:

North Oceanside Double Track Project – Public Meeting

On Wednesday, October 9, 2013 the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) and the North County Transit District (NCTD) will hold an informational public meeting addressing the North Oceanside Double Track Project.  The meeting will take place at Oceanside High School from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. According to the web site:

SANDAG meeting inviteThe project will eventually replace the aging single-track rail bridge over the San Luis Rey River with a modern, concrete double-track bridge and add a one-mile stretch of second main track that will join two existing double-track segments together. When complete, the project will create 10.3 miles of continuous double track along the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Corridor.

The project is part of a larger effort to improve Amtrak and COASTER passenger services by adding a second track to the 60-mile segment of the LOSSAN (Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo) rail corridor in San Diego County.

SANDAG also is collaborating with the City of Oceanside to:

  • Improve the bike and pedestrian undercrossing on the south side of the San Luis Rey River rail bridge
  • Redesign the car and pedestrian undercrossing adjacent to the Oceanside Harbor
  • Construct street median improvements at Surfrider Way to support a future Quiet Zone in Oceanside that would limit train horn noise

This is just one of many projects involving to the train system through Oceanside and the LOSSAN corridor.  Back in June the two organizations hosted a public meeting to discuss (in our opinion) long overdue updates to the Oceanside Transit Center. While most improvements are specific to increasing the number of trains able to board and pass through at any one time, a few updates to the station and it’s amenities were also discussed.

We’re always hopeful that there will be more options available for public transit, especially commuter-style trains, but we’re also skeptics of the dent this will make in the jammed I-5 traffic (especially in the summer) What’s the solution? All I can say is…HYPERLOOP!

FOFM.com would love to hear  your thoughts on transportation options affecting North County and beyond, so click on the “Leave a Comment” link next to the title of this article and let us know what YOU think!
