International airport possible on Camp Pendleton next to Oceanside / 76

KPBS mapThe possibility of an international airport in Oceanside has come up multiple times as Lindberg Field comes closer to reaching capacity. Now after a study by Cal State University San Marcos, supported by businessmen and philanthropists Irwin Jacobs and Malin Burnham, it’s back in the news.

While those in the area who travel frequently would love to have an option closer to home (sometimes it seems to take as long to fly to San Francisco as it does to drive) there are a couple of  reasons why this particular option has its drawbacks for residents of Oceanside.

If you’ve ever spent any time in Ocean Beach / Point Loma area or if you’ve payed attention to what the Mira Mar area residents say each time they’re faced with possibly expanding the airport in that area, you know the noise pollution doesn’t just affect the immediate surroundings, it travels along with the planes.

The study touts the airport being a draw for people from San Diego, OC and LA, which raises another concern that will make any commuter fill with horror – more traffic through Camp Pendleton.

To read more about the study follow this link to the report on KPBS web site or read the study for yourself here: https://www.csusm.edu/mba/docs/airport%202.0%20paper.pdf
